Mizoram

Mizoram was inaugurated as the 23rd state of the India in 1987. Located in the north east part in India, Mizoram is bounded by the states of Manipur, Tripura and Assam and shares 722 km international border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar. With a population of 1,091,014 (2011 census), Mizoram is one of the smallest states in India.

With an area of 21,081 sq km, Mizoram is a green and mountainous state at an average altitude of 1,000 m above the sea level. Tribal people account for more than 95 per cent of Mizoram’s population. Mizoram is not a homogenous society. On the other hand it is multi-cultural, multi-lingual and multi-religious. Mizoram is home to more than half a dozen tribes each having distinct languages, dresses, folklores, dances etc. Christianity is the predominant religion.

Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, is the hub of all economic activities in the state. Bairabi, Champai, Kolasib, Saiha, Sairang and Vairengte are the other important cities in the state.

The traditional method of Jhum cultivation is still in practice on in the state and most of the population are involved in agriculture sector.

In addition to various local dialects, Mizo and English are the most commonly spoken languages of the state. Mizoram has a literacy rate of 91.6 per cent, which is the second highest literacy rate among Indian states.

Highly green hills, crisscrossing rivers, and interspersed lakes are nature’s contribution to Mizoram. Located at an altitude of 3715 feet, the picturesque city of Aizawl is a beautiful travel destination, with wonderful attractions like Mizoram State Museum, Durtlang Hills, Mini Zoo, Berawtlang Tourist Complex and Luangmual Handicarfts Centre. The city is also the leaping off point for the magnificent attractions that are found in the state.

Mizoram comes under the category of most improved states. GDP wise it ranks 32. Area wise it ranks 25. Population wise it ranks 28.

Economy

Mizoram’s GDP per capita increased from63, 413 crore to 76,210 crore. In the fiscal 2014-15 to 2015- 16, commercial bank credits rose to 12 percent.

Health

The state is spending up to 60 per cent of its budget on public health since 2012. Assisted birth is up to 75.97 per cent by 2013/14.
